The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Spirit of Perseverance comes from The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a 2026 release composed by perfumer Mahsam Raza. This one's brief was clear: take the warm-spicy register and run it through a woodier, more resinous filter. Raza anchored the composition around allspice and ginger at the top, building a slow heat rather than a flash burn. The spices aren't shouting at you. They're banking coals, radiating warmth outward with intention, the kind of opening that feels deliberate from the first spray. As the composition settles, you get a sense of the architecture underneath: the heat from the top notes isn't fighting against the deeper materials, it's feeding into them. The name reads as a thesis statement. Perseverance.
What makes this composition worth your attention is the structural decision to lead with two high-heat spices at the top, then counterbalance with elemi and vetiver in the heart. Elemi bridges the sharp opening into the balsamic base without losing either side's character, carrying a lemony resin glow that softens the burn. The clove adds a medicinal warmth that feels deliberate, almost architectural, while vetiver grounds everything with its damp, rooty greenness. The interplay between these three creates a triangle of heat, green, and resin that doesn't collapse into generic warmth.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are bright and almost aggressive. Allspice and ginger arrive together, cutting through whatever you're wearing with a sharp, dry warmth that reads like biting into raw root. There's nothing gentle about it. The allspice carries a peppery, almost clove-like snap, while the ginger adds a clean heat that tingles at the back of your nose. Then the elemi and vetiver slide in underneath, and the sharpness softens into something more textured. The vetiver arrives green and earthy, cooling the burn while the elemi's peppery-resinous brightness keeps the composition from going flat. The clove blooms through the middle hour, giving the composition a sweet-spicy undertone that feels closer to mulled wine than cologne, deep and almost syrupy in its warmth. By the third hour the tonka bean and styrax take over completely. The drydown is where this fragrance lives.
Cultural impact
Spirit of Perseverance stakes its claim in the resinous spice territory, a space where sweetness takes a back seat and darker, smokier materials do the heavy lifting. The clove and styrax pairing gives it a seriousness that warmer compositions sometimes lack, pulling the blend toward something meditative and grounded rather than overtly festive. You smell this and you don't think of dessert. You think of cold air, woodsmoke, something burning slow in the next room.
