The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Spice It Up: Dark Leather arrived in 2025 from Mahsam Raza and The Dua Brand, a house that focuses on reconstructing recognizable scent profiles. This one sits in the Inspired Expression line and is marked as Similar to Viktor & Rolf's Spicebomb Dark Leather. The note pyramid that anchors both is what makes the connection legible to anyone who has worn the original: the spice-led opening, the resinous middle, and the leather-and-tobacco close. What Raza brings to the formula is a vegan build and his own hand on the balance, keeping the blueprint recognizable but adjusting the proportions so the juice reads as its own composition rather than a carbon copy.
The note list here is ruthlessly efficient. Two top notes, two heart notes, two base notes. Black pepper and nutmeg crack the seal. Frankincense and cinnamon fill the chamber. Black leather and tobacco hold the door shut behind you. It is a spice-leather structure built on six materials, and each one earns its place. The frankincense is the pivot, the resin that bridges the bright spice attack to the deep leather base. Without it, the composition would tilt entirely toward heat and lose its middle register.
The evolution
Black pepper hits the skin first and announces itself without apology. It's sharp, insistent, the kind of pepper that makes itself known before the other notes have settled. The nutmeg underneath adds a warmer, sweeter whisper that softens the edges just enough to keep the opening from being aggressive. The frankincense is the hinge of the fragrance, smoky and sacred, the kind of smoke that evokes old wood and older rooms rather than anything modern. As the opening settles, cinnamon starts its climb, sweet but dry, working with the frankincense to pull the whole composition into resinous territory. The leather arrives gradually, not a polished, showroom leather, but a black leather, dense and slightly sweet, sitting somewhere between a well-worn jacket and the inside of a vintage car.
Cultural impact
Spice It Up: Dark Leather sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, a catalog that puts recognizable designer structures within reach of a wider audience. It is a warm-spicy leather built for the kind of fragrance wearer who likes a composition with weight and density, something that announces itself when it enters a room and leaves a trace when it leaves. The black pepper and nutmeg opening sets a bright, spicy tone that the cinnamon and frankincense heart deepens into resinous territory, and the black leather and tobacco base anchors everything in a darker, more animalic register.
