The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Poseidon's Incense Affair landed in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a series the house uses to present its own take on familiar fragrance territory. The target here was Creed Aventus, specifically batch 15R01, the version of the original the formula references. Where that source composition leans on bright pineapple and birch smoke, The Dua Brand folded in Palo Santo and Somalian frankincense, two materials that drag the composition toward temple resin and candlewax warmth. The result reads less like a beach and more like a harbor at dusk, same fruit, different air. The incense pairing gives the juice a weight the original never had, trading some of Aventus's citrus snap for a slower, smokier burn that lingers on skin and fabric alike.
What makes this composition worth attention is the Somalian frankincense paired against the Aventus-style pineapple, a meeting of two olfactory worlds that rarely share a bottle. Frankincense brings a resin note that reads as cool, slightly green, and faintly sharp on the nose. Pineapple brings the tropical fruit character that defines so much modern masculine perfumery's current vocabulary.
The evolution
The opening phase is all fruit and acid. Bergamot lands sharp, pineapple cuts sweet, apple rounds the edges, and the pink pepper adds a bright prickle that makes the whole introduction feel like biting into something cold. Blackcurrant sits underneath, darker than you'd expect, already hinting at the incense that's about to arrive. As the composition settles, the Somalian frankincense and Palo Santo have made their entrance. The pineapple doesn't disappear; it gets smoked, the way a grilled version of the fruit would taste, with caramelized sugar replacing the raw bite of the top. The birch tar deepens that effect, giving the heart a leathery, almost tarry quality that wraps around the fruit like a coat. This is the phase that smells most different from the Aventus template it references.
Cultural impact
Poseidon's Incense Affair pushes a widely-recognized benchmark toward a more incense-heavy, resinous register, and that single shift does a lot of the talking. For wearers familiar with the Aventus template, it offers a reading that feels darker and more meditative without losing the fruit-forward architecture that made the source material a standard in the first place. The Somalian frankincense and Palo Santo additions give it a ceremonial undertone that sets it apart from brighter, more tropical interpretations of the same territory.
