The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Owner Of Destiny dropped in 2023 from Mahsam Raza's workshop, part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. It's pitched as a chypre fruity, which tells you most of what you need to know before the first spray: dark fruit on top, resin and leather underneath, a composition that refuses to play it safe. Plum and raspberry lead the charge, juicy and slightly tart, with a candied edge that hints at something darker underneath. As the opening softens, jasmine and davana linger in the middle, and labdanum with benzoin do the heavy lifting at the base, anchoring everything in a sticky, ambered warmth. Raza composed it as a unisex statement. The kind of scent that doesn't pick a side.
What makes the structure interesting is how the fruit and the resin refuse to stay in their lanes. Plum usually rides sweet; here it pulls toward leather and labdanum almost immediately, transforming from confection to something more animalic within the first thirty minutes. Davana, the underused one, brings a boozy, almost herbal edge that keeps the jasmine from going powdery, giving the heart a fermented wine quality that feels closer to a vintage bordeaux than a typical floral accord.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are loud. Plum and raspberry hit sweet, almost jammy, before the white flowers and jasmine pull up through the middle and give it lift. Davana adds something you can't quite name, herbal and fermented at the same time. Around the 30-minute mark, the leather shows up, and the whole thing tilts darker. Not smoky leather. More like the inside of a glove that's been left on a chair for an afternoon. Labdanum and benzoin take over from there, sticky and resinous, and patchouli hums underneath like a bass note nobody asked for but everybody feels. The fruit fades by hour two but never fully disappears; it just folds into the amber. What you're left with at hour five is a warm, balsamic close, skin-close and quiet. On fabric the next morning, it's all benzoin and plum shadow.
Cultural impact
Owner Of Destiny sits in The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, and within that catalog it stands out as one of the more overtly chypre-leaning entries. That positioning matters because the chypre family has thinned out considerably in mainstream fragrance over the last decade, pushed aside by sweeter, more gourmand-forward compositions. A release that leans into dark fruit and labdanum as confidently as this one does feels like a quiet counter-programming move, an offering for anyone who still finds the old architecture appealing.
