The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Released by The Dua Brand in 2018 as part of their Inspired Expression collection, Impresario is a chypré built to channel old-school European perfumery through a modern, accessible lens. The composition is said to pay homage to Sergei Diaghilev, the impresario behind the Ballets Russes, that era when art, excess, and theatrical risk all shared the same dressing room. The ingredient lineup tells you this is not a casual undertaking. Bergamot from Calabria, rose from Egypt described as rosa centifolia, and jasmine from Grasse all make an appearance, sourced materials with a pedigree usually reserved for bottles that sit behind glass at boutique counters. There's a sense of curation here, of someone deciding exactly which textures belong in the same room.
What sets Impresario apart is the sheer density of the heart. This one opens up into a ballroom. Egyptian rosa centifolia, ylang-ylang, tuberose, heliotrope, and orris root all share the floor, each bloom pushing forward, then pulling back to let another take the lead. The result is a floral heart that reads more like a rich, powdery blend of texture than a single dominant note. Rosa centifolia brings that soft, almost honeyed rose quality, while ylang-ylang adds a creamy, banana-like sweetness that lifts the heavier flowers.
The evolution
The opening is all citrus and green. Amalfi lemon, Calabrian bergamot, lime, and orange hit like a cold splash, bright and almost aggressive, the kind of burst that makes you check your wrist twice. The Calabrian bergamot carries that distinctive sharp, slightly bitter edge, while the Amalfi lemon brings a sweeter, more sun-warmed quality. Lime adds a tart, almost electric note, and the orange softens the whole composition with a rounded, juicy warmth. Tarragon weaves through the citrus with a green, slightly anise-like herbal quality that keeps the opening from feeling one-dimensional. Blackcurrant bud contributes a catty, green sharpness that adds complexity without dominating. Then the chypré architecture takes over, oakmoss and patchouli rising through the florals like the foundation of an old building, grounding everything that came before.
Cultural impact
Impresario occupies a distinctive place within the chypré tradition, a category with deep roots in European perfumery. The fragrance draws its inspiration from the Ballets Russes era and the world of Sergei Diaghilev, a period when artistic ambition, visual spectacle, and creative collaboration defined an entire cultural moment. Diaghilev's legacy as an impresario who brought together artists, composers, and designers to create something greater than the sum of its parts resonates through this composition.
