The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fancy A Pop? arrived in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, leaning fully into gourmand territory with a confection that feels more like an indulgence than an imitation. The premise is simple. Take the comforting oddity of buttered popcorn, douse it in hawthorn's tart fruitiness, and let the whole confection dissolve into caramel, cream, and a deep vanilla heart. The result reads as a wearable dessert, one where the savory salt of the popcorn note keeps the sweeter elements from collapsing into pure sugar. Hawthorn acts as the counterbalance, its sharp fruit profile slicing through the richness just enough to keep things interesting.
What defines the opening is the tension between salt and sweetness. Salted popcorn paired with hawthorn creates a sharp, savory-fruity entry that keeps the composition from collapsing into pure sugar. The heart layers caramel and cream with Queen of the Night, a night-blooming floral that adds a cool, almost lunar lift before the base takes over. Ebony wood and vetiver ground the sweetness with a darker, smokier edge that prevents the drydown from reading as synthetic. The interplay feels deliberate, almost architectural.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are the most unexpected. Salted popcorn dominates with a savory, buttery warmth, and hawthorn cuts through it with a tart brightness that keeps the sweetness honest. By the thirty-minute point, vanilla and caramel have settled into the dominant register, turning the composition into something warmer and richer than a straightforward snack interpretation. Cream softens the edges, and Queen of the Night adds a cool, ghostly floral whisper that lifts the whole thing off the skin. Around the two-hour mark, the base asserts itself. Benzoin brings a warm, almost almond-like resin depth, amber rounds it out, and ebony lends a dry, polished woodiness. Vetiver peeks out at the edges with a subtle smoky greenness. The drydown is what lingers most.
Cultural impact
Fancy A Pop? leans into playful gourmand territory, and salted popcorn as a top note gives it a savory edge that sets the tone early. The hawthorn pairing adds a tart brightness that separates it from straightforward dessert compositions, keeping the opening sharp rather than syrupy. It reads as the kind of scent someone reaches for on a night out rather than a formal occasion, casual and a bit indulgent. The combination of buttery, salty, and fruity elements makes it feel less like a traditional perfume and more like a wearable snack, which is part of the appeal.
