The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Isfarkand started life as an Ormonde Jayne composition, one that earned a devoted following among lovers of the house's signature style. Its formula centers on a bright citrus-woods axis built around vetiver, moss, and Iso E Super, a combination that gives Isfarkand its distinctive character. When The Dua Brand released Elixir of Isfarkand, the intent was straightforward: take that structure, reinforce it, and present it in Extrait de Parfum concentration. The release extends the composition into a format built for endurance. Elixir of Isfarkand offers wearers a version of the original DNA rendered at higher concentration, with the citrus-woods architecture intact but tuned for longer wear.
What makes the Isfarkand DNA worth amplifying is its reliance on Iso E Super, a synthetic molecule with a velvety, almost pheromonal quality. It behaves differently from natural cedar or vetiver, hovering at the edge of perception, creating a sense of something woody without committing to any specific wood. Pair it with real lime, mandarin, and bergamot, and the tension between synthetic softness and natural sharpness produces something that smells neither fully natural nor fully constructed.
The evolution
The opening minutes are all citrus and almost aggressive about it. Lime hits first, sharp and green, then mandarin softens the edges while bergamot adds a soapy brightness underneath. The Iso E Super is present from the start but stays subtle, a hum beneath the fruit rather than a statement. As the composition develops, the citruses begin to recede and the wood elements start to negotiate their way forward. Cedar comes through clean and pencil-shaving dry, not the creamy cedar of a typical woody fragrance. Vetiver arrives in tandem, earthy and slightly bitter, grounding the composition. The moss note, often the trickiest to render without veering into mildew, stays restrained, contributing dampness without weight. Through the later stages the fragrance settles into its drydown: a smooth, almost transparent woody base where Iso E Super dominates, creating that characteristic velvety haze.
Cultural impact
Elixir of Isfarkand sits within The Dua Brand's Elixir line, a series that presents compositions at Extrait de Parfum concentration. The fragrance appeals to wearers who gravitate toward the original Isfarkand's structure but want more presence and endurance. It reads as a clean, unisex option for people who find most woody-citrus fragrances either too fleeting or too synthetic. The composition offers a balance that suits daily wear, working well in settings where a strong woody-citrus profile feels appropriate without overwhelming.
