The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Betrayal arrived in 2018 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The fragrance draws direct inspiration from Amouage's Imitation Man, a leather composition from the Omani house. The connection is stated right in the notes themselves: Turkish rose draped in suede-dark castoreum, myrrh smoke curling underneath. It's a translation rather than a copy, and the fragrance takes the original's blueprint and runs with it. Turkish rose sits at the heart of the composition, wrapped in the dense, almost animalic pull of castoreum that gives the whole fragrance its leather register. Myrrh threads through the base, adding a smoldering, resinous weight that grounds the florals and keeps them from feeling pretty for the sake of pretty.
The interesting move here is the layering. Turkish rose and orris form a floral core that reads almost plush, but the castoreum and myrrh underneath pull the whole thing into leather territory before you register what's happened. That tension between softness and animalic darkness is what makes the composition work. The rose doesn't stay in its lane; it gets pulled downward, dressed in something rougher, and the suede-like castoreum gives it a tactile, almost worn-in quality from the opening.
The evolution
The opening belongs to pepper and nutmeg, a dry, almost bitter heat that sits on top of the Turkish rose like armor. The rose is already there underneath, but it's not showing its face yet. As the fragrance settles, the orris and violet arrive together, powdery and cool, and the castoreum starts to register as something more than an idea. The castoreum carries a leathery, slightly fecal edge that grounds the florals and refuses to let them float away. The drydown is where the composition reveals its patience. Myrrh and patchouli take over as the rose begins to recede, and the butter note earns its keep: it softens everything without sweetening it. Late in the wear, what's left on skin smells like suede and old paper, warm and slightly worn. Eventually it fades into a ghost of warm wood, barely there but stubbornly present.
Cultural impact
Betrayal sits comfortably within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around reinterpretation. The fragrance appeals to wearers who want the character and depth of a leather-driven composition without the price tag of the original. It wears like a statement of taste, not status, and the suede-dark castoreum gives it a presence that reads as confident rather than loud. For anyone drawn to rose compositions that pull toward leather and resin rather than clean florals, Betrayal offers a route into that territory. It's the kind of scent that rewards close wearing and reveals more of itself the longer it stays on skin.
