Why it exists.
The beginning
Kyphi is an ancient incense formula, and Solstice Scents' 2018 release uses it as a creative springboard for a fragrance built around frankincense, myrrh, and labdanum. But this isn't a museum piece. The raisins are plump, the wine is real, and the honey carries a warmth that feels less archaeological than alchemical, as if someone translated an old ceremony into something you could actually wear to dinner. St. John's approach to kyphi gave her permission to go deep on the resins she loves, layering frankincense EOs, absolutes, CO2s, and a Hojary tincture that adds a green, almost coniferous dimension to the opening.
The composition is structured with care. St. John layers frankincense in multiple forms, essential oil, absolute, CO2 extract, and a Hojary tincture, each one catching a different facet of the resin. Galangal gets similar attention, paired with fresh ginger and ginger CO2 for a layered spice that reads warm rather than sharp. The wine accord is built around a gentle, mulberry-like note rather than a boisterous fruit, and the beeswax works alongside honey and raisins in the middle stage, softening the intensity of the resins and giving the sweetness a candlelit, waxy texture.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to frankincense, all three extractions stacked and unmistakable, backed by lemongrass that adds a green, almost grassy brightness before disappearing. Cassia arrives quietly underneath, reading as cinnamon's sharper sibling. Honey and raisin swell into the heart, dense and golden, with beeswax giving everything a waxy, candlelit texture. The red wine stays subtle throughout, more a shadow than a note, adding a fermenting fruit undertone that keeps the sweetness from going cloying. After two hours the resins take over. Myrrh and labdanum deepen into something that smells less like perfume and more like warm stone in a sealed room. The honey recedes but never vanishes. As the composition goes quiet, the drydown becomes a close-skin affair of pine resin, beeswax, and the faintest trace of raisin.
