The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Green Awakening arrived in 2023 from Skylar, the Los Angeles house built around the idea that fragrance should work for everyone, even skin that protests at conventional perfume. The brief was straightforward: take green seriously. Not as an accent or a top-note courtesy, but as the architecture. The result is a fragrance that opens like walking into a greenhouse before the doors fully open, alive, dewy, with something almost medicinal keeping the sweetness honest.
The choice of hemp as a heart note is the telling move. Hemp carries an herbal, slightly earthy quality that most perfumers avoid, it's the kind of material that makes a composition divisive by design. Here, Skylar let it sit alongside violet and water lily, creating a botanical triad that keeps the sweetness of pear and pineapple leaf from becoming dessert. It's a green fragrance that refuses to be polite about it.
The evolution
The opening announces itself for roughly five minutes: green stems and crushed pear, pineapple leaf cutting through with tart brightness. No subtlety at the gate. Then the heart arrives, the cannabis note reveals itself, and suddenly the composition shifts from dewy to grounded. Violet adds its powdery floral cool. Water lily brings the wet. The transition isn't dramatic, but it's noticeable: the scent moves from greenhouse to something closer to skin, cooler and more aquatic. The drydown belongs to amber, musk, and patchouli, warm without heaviness, intimate without density. Lasts four to six hours depending on skin, with moderate sillage that stays close. This is a fragrance that becomes you.
Cultural impact
Green Awakening reflects the clean beauty movement that gained momentum in the 2020s, when consumers increasingly demanded transparency about fragrance ingredients and their sourcing. Skylar's hypoallergenic positioning addressed a growing community of scent-sensitive wearers who had difficulty finding perfumes that would not irritate their skin. The hemp and botanical heart notes tapped into the wellness zeitgeist of the era, aligning fragrance with the broader cultural embrace of plant-based and natural products. The brand's cruelty-free, vegan approach resonated strongly with ethically conscious younger consumers who considered animal testing and environmental impact alongside scent quality.
