The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Salas set out to capture the restless rhythm of the Gulf's shoreline, a place where desert meets sea. Partnering with master perfumer Christian Provenzano, the team translated that contrast into Oceane, named for the endless blue that frames the Emirates coast. The composition contrasts artemisia's sharp, bitter opening with the warmth of amber, tonka, and oud in the base, mirroring how the coast holds both clarity and depth. Provenzano structured the fragrance to move like a tide, pulling the wearer through distinct stages rather than settling into a single impression.
The choice of artemisia in the opening reflects a deliberate rejection of straightforward freshness. Where most coastal fragrances begin with marine or ozonic notes, Oceane starts with something slightly bitter, slightly medicinal, evoking the coastal herbs that grow along the Emirates shoreline. The pineapple and geranium heart then shift the tone toward warmth, grounded by the drydown's amber and oud. This note structure balances the sharp clarity of the opening against the sweet depth of the base, creating a fragrance that feels both refreshing and substantial.
The evolution
Oceane begins at the shoreline, where artemisia's bitter-green aroma meets bergamot and lemon in a crisp, almost bracing opening. Within minutes, pineapple emerges as the heart's dominant voice, its tropical sweetness amplified against geranium's clean floral edge and lavender's aromatic calm. The transition feels natural, as though the citrus and herbs have simply made way for something warmer. The drydown shifts the focus entirely to amber, tonka bean, cedarwood, sandalwood, and oud, creating a warm, woody finish that carries the fragrance well past the four-hour mark. The pineapple lingers in the background, a ghost of sweetness beneath the resinous depth, preventing the base from feeling purely masculine. This progression mirrors the movement from open water to shore to the quiet of dusk.
Cultural impact
Since its quiet debut, Oceane has found a niche among collectors who appreciate a marine‑inspired aromatic that bridges Middle Eastern oud tradition with Mediterranean freshness, often mentioned alongside Salas’s Angel and Eros for its balanced unisex appeal. Its release sparked interest in marine‑citrus blends, influencing several niche houses to explore similar themes.
