The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
SEPT.21.1966 is named for a specific date, a moment held in amber, translated into scent. Arturetto Landi built this composition for Rundholz. Each Rundholz fragrance carries a date in its name. This one marks September 21, 1966. The green sharpness at the opening evokes that moment, bright and tart, while a smoky undertone suggests the residue of what came after. It's a fragrance built around contrast, the crispness of something immediate and the warmth of what lingers.
Rhubarb brings a tart, almost medicinal brightness that few perfumers attempt. Mate adds a dry, herbal quality that reads as green without being citrus or lavender. Pink pepper bridges the two, soft and aromatic, keeping the composition coherent as it shifts. In the heart, magnolia and heliotrope move the fragrance toward creamy florals, but the cool green notes never fully disappear. The base is where Landi's craft shows: frankincense and oud together create something smoky and contemplative, but used with restraint. This isn't oud as a statement. It's oud as a whisper that lingers.
The evolution
The opening is the sharpest moment, rhubarb's tart bite, mate's dry green, pink pepper's delicate spice. For the first thirty minutes, it's cool and slightly austere. The heart arrives quietly: magnolia and heliotrope soften the green edges, adding a powdery floral warmth that feels like stepping into a different register. The frankincense doesn't crash in, it accumulates. By the third hour, the smoke has settled into the composition and the oud adds a dark, resinous depth that lingers close to the skin. The drydown shifts from the initial brightness into something more contemplative, the green and floral elements gradually dissolving into smoke and wood. What remains is present but no longer demanding, an afterimage rather than a statement.
Cultural impact
SEPT.21.1966 appeals to those drawn to fragrance as a form of personal expression rather than mere decoration. The green-smoky character creates an interesting tension, bright and tart at the opening, warm and contemplative as it develops. The date in the name gives the wearer something specific to hold onto, a reference point that transforms scent into memory.
