The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Number 5 Elixir arrived in 2024, a continuation from a house that built itself on restraint. Rosendo Mateu spent more than 50 years composing for others before launching his own label in 2017, and even then, he kept things sparse. Twenty-two fragrances across two numbered lines. Each one anchored by three primary materials. His son Joan took over after the founder's death in 2021 and has continued releasing new editions through at least 2026. Number 5 Elixir is a direct evolution of the original Number 5, intensified in concentration and refined in balance. It carries the weight of five decades of formulation knowledge distilled into a single elixir.
The thing that separates Number 5 Elixir from a standard warm spicy fragrance is the lily of the valley, threaded through the opening and heart, not simply an initial flourish. Most compositions treat this note as a fleeting top accord. Here it persists, softening the saffron and spices into something that feels woven rather than layered. The other notable move: strawberry in the heart. Uncommon in oriental frameworks, where fruit usually appears in the opening or drydown. Using it as a transitional note gives the heart a contemporary sweetness that keeps the whole composition from settling into expected territory.
The evolution
An hour on skin and the initial punch softens considerably. The florals come forward, lily of the valley and carnation trading space with the strawberry. The spice recedes to a background hum. This is when the fragrance feels most personal: intimate projection, skin-warm, the kind of sillage that someone two seats away notices but doesn't get assaulted by. After three hours, the amber and tonka anchor everything. Vanilla follows. The strawberry is still there, playing underneath, giving the drydown a sweetness that doesn't feel like dessert. Ten-plus hours in, on clothing especially, the base holds. A faint warmth of amber and vanilla the next morning. This is what people mean when they talk about a fragrance that rewards patience, not because the opening is difficult, but because the full arc takes time to reveal itself.
Cultural impact
The 2024 launch of Rosendo Mateu Nº 5 Elixir marked a significant moment for the Olfactive Expressions house, representing the first major intensification of their signature Nº 5 composition. The fragrance entered a market increasingly saturated with oud and rose-forward orientals, carving space with its unexpected lily of the valley and strawberry combination. This floral-fruity orientation within a warm spicy framework resonated with wearers seeking something distinct from prevailing trends. The elixir concentration signaled the house's willingness to pursue longevity and projection as primary selling points, a departure from the more restrained approach that characterized earlier releases.
