The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Shah'ryar takes its name from the sultan of Arabian Nights, the king whose obsession with Scheherazade's stories shaped the frame narrative of One Thousand and One Nights. The fragrance draws from that same well of excess and appetite. Rania Jouaneh built this as a tribute to the opulence those tales describe, the sensory world of a ruler who wanted everything and got it. The composition channels the opulent spirit of those narratives, drawing on Jouaneh's background to create something that earns its name.
What makes Shah'ryar distinctive is its density without apology. The plum and caramel combination reads like dark jam, but the labdanum adds a resinous, animalic undertone that keeps it from being merely sweet. The beeswax in the base is unusual in modern perfumery, lending a waxy, almost ceremonial quality that recalls incense and candlelit chambers. This is not a fragrance that asks permission.
The evolution
The first spray hits with caramel's sweetness cutting through bergamot's bright edge. Twenty minutes in, the plum arrives like jam on warm bread, dense and unapologetic. The osmanthus keeps its apricot-floral whisper in the background, never quite dominating but adding a soft counterpoint to the sweetness. By the third hour, the labdanum emerges with its honeyed, animalic resin. The drydown belongs to the oud, sandalwood, and vanilla, a warm, woody foundation that holds the beeswax note throughout, giving the whole composition an almost edible quality that lingers close to the skin for hours. On fabric, this one lasts until the next wash.
Cultural impact
This dense, sweet-animalic oriental finds itself among richer interpretations of the genre. Its dense, sweet-animalic character places it among richer interpretations of the genre. Shah'ryar emerges as a bold contemporary statement, balancing heavy oriental warmth with refined elegance. The fragrance opens with a warm, enveloping sweetness that gradually reveals deeper animalic undertones as it settles, creating a scent that feels both opulent and sophisticated.
