Why it exists.
The beginning
Provenance arrived in 2024, the work of Quentin Hernandez, who builds every Qhue composition himself from his New York studio. The name carries weight. Provenance suggests lineage, origin, the story a thing carries before it reaches you. Hernandez is a self-taught perfumer who composes from a quiet understanding of how materials behave, letting each note find its place within a larger architecture. Tobacco leaf and aged leather anchor the composition, but they are handled with a softness that keeps them from feeling heavy or dated. The amber and benzoin underneath lend a glow, a warmth that registers close to the skin rather than projecting aggressively into the room. Bergamot cuts through at the top, a brief bright edge that lifts the whole structure off the ground.
What's worth noticing is how the warm-spice register dominates without losing nuance. Amber and bergamot open the door together, one rich and resinous, the other sharp and lifted, a tension that keeps the composition from collapsing into pure sweetness. The heart layers blond tobacco with leather and spiced rum, a combination that flirts with gourmand territory without ever tipping into dessert. The spiced rum brings a rounded, almost caramelized quality that weaves through the tobacco and leather rather than sitting on top of them.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to bergamot and amber, a bright resinous crackle that feels almost architectural. Then the tobacco arrives, and the shape changes. Blond tobacco and leather push forward together, wrapped in spiced rum that adds a boozy warmth without reading as literal alcohol. The drydown is where this composition earns its reputation. Benzoin, tonka bean, and bourbon vanilla settle into something close and long-lasting, a skin scent with backbone. The base notes anchor the whole structure with a sweetness that never tips into syrup, the benzoin doing most of the heavy lifting while tonka rounds out the edges. As the hours pass, the leather softens and the rum fades into a quieter amber sweetness that clings to fabric and skin alike.
Cultural impact
Provenance earned an Honorable Mention in the Artisan category at the 2025 Art and Olfaction Awards, a distinction that marks it as a composition recognized by the independent fragrance community for its craft. The tobacco leaf, aged leather, and spiced rum at its core give it a layered warmth that feels deliberate and considered. Rum and amber bring a sweetness with weight to it, while blond tobacco and leather add a dry, slightly smoky register underneath. On skin the composition opens with a resinous crackle of bergamot and amber, then eases into its warmer heart within the first quarter hour.
