Why it exists.
The beginning
Lal takes its name from a valuable bright gem in red colour, but the fragrance itself is less a jewel than a keepsake. Per the house, it was conceived as a reminder of someone loved, a person so fixed in memory that their absence becomes a kind of presence. Perfumer Aslan Gülçiçek composed the 2024 release to carry that emotional weight through scent rather than structure, choosing materials that recall warmth before they recall any specific place. Released as part of Puzzle Parfum's inaugural 2024 cohort alongside Fibonacci, Daylight, Purgatory, and Sarcastic, Lal stands on its own within the brand's debut set.
What makes the composition distinctive is the carnation-nutmeg opening, a pairing built around the dry, slightly bitter heat of both materials. Carnation brings the floral-spicy tension, nutmeg supplies the dry warmth, and together they create an impression that's warmer and more herbal than sweet. Clove, where present in some listings, adds a sharper aromatic edge that keeps the opening from reading as gourmand. Rose anchors the heart alongside frankincense and patchouli, which keeps the floral from going pretty.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are assertive. Nutmeg and carnation hit together with a dusty, almost peppery warmth, and there's a clove-like sharpness underneath that registers before the florals arrive. It's the loudest the fragrance ever gets, and it matters, because it sets up the contrast that follows. By the 45-minute mark, rose and frankincense take the wheel. The rose here is dark rather than dewy, undercut by incense smoke and the earthy depth of patchouli. It reads with the gravity of rose attar rather than fresh-cut stems, which is exactly the character that makes Lal feel literary rather than decorative. The base arrives somewhere around the 3-hour mark and never really leaves. Vanilla softens the edges of the amber, sandalwood gives it body, and musk does the quiet work of keeping everything close to skin.
