The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Matelda is part of the Dante Collection, Profumo di Firenze's homage to the city that built the brand's identity over eight centuries of unbroken presence in Florence. The name itself carries weight, drawn from the Florentine poetic tradition, intimate with both earthly beauty and divine love. Peach blossom and chamomile may seem like a soft pairing, but in the hands of a house built on apothecary wisdom, nothing is merely decorative. Chamomile was medicine first. Peach blossom was ritual. Matelda takes both and asks: what does comfort smell like when it's earned?
The note structure here is quietly interesting. White grapefruit opens the composition, not a typical companion for peach blossom, which could easily tip into something synthetic and flat. The grapefruit keeps the top bright, gives it a morning quality before the florals take over. Chamomile in the heart is the real move: herbal, almost medicinal, it tempers the sweetness without killing it. The base is where Profumo di Firenze's pharmacy roots show. Benzoin and Peru balsam are resinous, slightly balsamic, these are the materials that trained the friars' hands centuries before anyone called what they made perfume.
The evolution
Matelda opens bright. White grapefruit and peach blossom arrive together, but the grapefruit exits first, maybe twenty minutes in, once it's done its job of waking things up. What replaces it is chamomile. Not aggressive. Just there, holding the sweetness down, keeping it honest. The heart develops over the next two hours: violet appears, powdery and slightly floral, weaving between the chamomile and the peach. Then the base takes over. Benzoin and vanilla arrive quietly, followed by sandalwood and tonka bean. The musk is subtle, it doesn't announce itself, it binds everything together. By hour four, the drydown is warm, creamy, and close to the skin. On some skin types, this fragrance lingers into the next morning, a quiet ghost of vanilla and peach that surprises you in the shower.
Cultural impact
Matelda has found its audience among wearers who want sweetness without spectacle. The chamomile addition separates it from generic peach fragrances, it brings an herbal calm that makes the sweetness feel earned rather than delivered. Community reviews describe it as cozy, bright, and mood-lifting. The moderate sillage means it stays close to the skin, making it a practical choice for professional settings where projection matters less than longevity.
