The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Prima Materia approached 5 Dragon as an alchemical challenge rather than a marketing exercise. Gerard Anthony, the house perfumer, sought to capture the literal breath of a dragon, not as mythology but as a material challenge. The brief called for contrast, for fire held in check, and for the house's seven years of research into raw natural extracts to be deployed in service of that goal. The result is a fragrance that opens with sharp, immediate intensity and then transforms rather than simply fades.
The choice of Lemon for the opening was deliberate, a bright, almost acidic note that creates the initial spark the brief required. Pink Pepper and Black Pepper support it with their respective qualities of delicate heat and deeper warmth. The heart builds on the spice premise with Nutmeg and Cinnamon, materials that Prima Materia has researched extensively. Lavender bridges the transition from spice to wood, its aromatic quality providing continuity. The drydown settles into Oakmoss and Cedarwood, materials that anchor the fragrance and provide the alchemical metaphor of transformation from fire to earth.
The evolution
The opening phase of 5 Dragon presents Lemon as the brightest element, immediately tempered by the dual spice of Pink Pepper and Black Pepper. The contrast is intentional, the citrus and the pepper heat competing for dominance in a volatile first act. As the fragrance moves into its heart phase, Nutmeg and Cinnamon take over, softening the citrus sharpness into a warm, enveloping spice that becomes the dominant character. Lavender emerges as a balancing element, providing aromatic freshness that keeps the spice from becoming heavy. The drydown represents the final transformation, with Oakmoss providing an earthy, slightly green quality while Cedarwood adds structural woody depth. Tonka Bean arrives last to sweeten the woody base and extend longevity on skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, 5 Dragon has become a quiet favorite among those who appreciate a scent that balances bold spice with refined earthiness. Wearers often note its dragon motif on the bottle, linking the fragrance to a sense of guarded confidence that fits both creative studios and urban evenings.
