Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Prima Materia began around 2013 when a group of fragrance enthusiasts started experimenting with alchemical concepts, treating perfume as a material transformation. Over the next years they refined formulas, sourced rare botanicals and explored the chemistry of scent. In 2020 the collective formalised the project as a brand, registering the name Prima Materia in France. The same year they secured contracts to scent cultural institutions, positioning themselves as early adopters of venue fragrance in the arts sector. 2021 marked the public debut of their first perfume line, a burst of releases that included Tricheuse, 9 Alchemist, L'Aviatrice, L'Aviateur, 111 Mermaids, Majorette, 12 Bird, Louve, 5 Dragon and Trickster. Each fragrance arrived in a distinctive pewter bottle, a nod to the brand’s alchemical roots. The rapid rollout demonstrated the team’s ability to translate laboratory work into market‑ready products while maintaining a focus on natural ingredients. Since its launch, Prima Materia has continued to collaborate with museums and performance spaces, providing bespoke scent installations that enhance visitor experience. The brand’s evolution reflects a blend of scientific rigor, artistic ambition and a commitment to craft that remains anchored in its original alchemical curiosity.
Prima Materia treats perfume as a laboratory experiment, where raw materials undergo a controlled transformation. The founders describe alchemy not as mysticism but as a disciplined method of extracting essence from nature. This mindset drives the brand to prioritize transparency in ingredient sourcing and to favor materials that can be traced to their origin. Sustainability informs every decision; the team selects botanicals harvested with minimal impact and works with suppliers who share a respect for biodiversity. Creative vision rests on the idea that a scent should tell a story without relying on marketing clichés. Each launch is built around a single concept—freedom, myth, or a specific animal—allowing the olfactory narrative to unfold clearly. The brand also believes that scent can shape public spaces, enhancing emotional resonance in galleries or theatres. By extending its expertise beyond personal perfume, Prima Materia aims to demonstrate that fragrance is a versatile tool for cultural expression, not just a personal accessory.
