The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Closeness was conceived as one of Pleasing's inaugural scents, the one that lives in the space between you and someone who matters. Where other fragrances in the collection reach outward with bright citrus and heady florals, this one turns inward, drawing the wearer into a more private register of scent. Robertet collaborated with the Pleasing creative team, with stylists Harry Lambert guiding the visual approach, to craft a fragrance that reflected the brand's philosophy. The collaboration aimed to build something that felt both intimate and refined, capturing the essence of subtle elegance. The result is a fragrance that doesn't perform. It simply is, inviting those nearby to lean in and discover more.
What makes Closeness distinctive is the interplay between two opposing forces: the clean, almost clinical precision of its opening and the warm, lived-in quality of its drydown. Pink pepper, cardamom, and an almost-abstract notion of fabric itself create that initial impression of crisp clarity. The orris root serves as the bridge between these two worlds, adding a soft, powdery dimension that tempers the sharpness of the top notes. Cashmere wood delivers warmth without heaviness, preventing the base from becoming too dense or overwhelming.
The evolution
The opening hits clean and bright, pink pepper's citrusy spice over cardamom's green warmth, with an almost laundered quality that reads as fabric. Not a specific scent so much as the idea of clean sheets. This initial phase settles and evolves before the heart arrives, where bamboo's subtle green depth meets the soft, powdery character of orris root. The transition isn't dramatic, it's more like watching afternoon light change in a quiet room. The base is where Closeness earns its name. Cashmere wood and Indian papyrus create a warm, slightly earthy foundation, while salted musk keeps everything grounded and mineral. This phase lingers close to the skin, barely detectable until someone leans in, creating that intimate quality the fragrance is named for.
Cultural impact
The fragrance landscape includes many options that project loudly and demand attention. Closeness takes a different approach, positioning itself as intimate and close by design. Community discussion often draws comparisons between this scent and Glossier You, noting similarities in their approach to skin-like warmth and personal presence. The fragrance appeals to those who appreciate subtlety and discretion, preferring a scent that reveals itself only to those in close proximity rather than announcing itself across a room.
