The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ouragan arrived in 2024 as part of Phenom's debut collection of six fragrances, with perfumer Chris Maurice behind five of them. The name means hurricane in French, and the official description makes no secret of the intent: an olfactory explosion that captures the raw intensity of a storm in full force. No heritage, no quiet, just a fragrance that arrived loud and has stayed loud. Ouragan is the house's answer to anyone who thought bold didn't belong in modern perfumery.
What makes Ouragan unusual is the note structure itself. Most oriental-woody fragrances lead with warmth, amber, oud, spice. Ouragan opens with violet and saffron, two materials that bring something almost medicinal and cool before the sweetness arrives. The dates add a sticky, almost fermented sweetness that most people either find fascinating or unsettling. Combined with the leather and nutmeg in the heart, this creates a composition that doesn't follow the expected oriental playbook. The gurjum balsam in the base, related to myrrh and used sparingly in Western perfumery, adds a balsamic depth that grounds the more aggressive top and heart notes into something that actually wears well over time.
The evolution
The opening hits within seconds, violet and saffron arriving together with an almost sharp quality, followed immediately by the sticky sweetness of dates. This phase lasts roughly 20-30 minutes and is where most of the polarizing behavior happens. Some wearers describe it as medicinal; others find it fascinating. Then the leather emerges, dark and angular, overtaking the sweetness. The jasmine and ylang-ylang add warmth but never soften the composition into something polite. By the second hour, the amber and sandalwood base takes over, and this is where Ouragan settles into its most wearable territory, warm, slightly animalic, with the gurjum balsam adding a balsamic depth that lingers close to the skin. On most skin types, the drydown lasts 6-8 hours, with the sillage remaining strong throughout the first three hours before becoming more intimate.
Cultural impact
Ouragan has found its audience among wearers who want a fragrance that makes a statement. The strong sillage and longevity have earned it a reputation as a fragrance that announces itself before you enter, with the leather and saffron combination drawing comparisons to heavier oriental-woody compositions. Community reviews note it reads as loud, angular, and distinctive, not for those seeking subtlety, but for those who want to be remembered.
