The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Excursion arrives as part of La Collection Renaissance, Les Échos de l'Océan. The collection takes its name from the ocean's echoes, but Excursion itself is a story of departure: the moment you decide to leave. Built around a tension, the citrus clarity of departure meets the soft warmth of arrival. Neroli and bergamot open sharp and clear, like open air. The heart settles into orange blossom and marshmallow, the comfort of something known. The drydown stays close: heliotrope's talc-soft whisper, vanilla's warmth, white musk that never shouts. It is, ultimately, a fragrance about the journey rather than the destination, which is perhaps why it wears so well.
What makes Excursion unusual is how it handles orange blossom. That note can tip into indolic territory, heavy, almost animalic, when it decays. Here, the marshmallow intercepts. It keeps the orange blossom sweet, almost creamy, and prevents the drydown from turning soapy. The tolu balsam in the heart adds a subtle balsamic richness, a bridge between the bright top and the powdery base. The heliotrope at the finish is the real tell: a soft, slightly almond-like powder that recalls clean skin and quiet comfort rather than florals in full bloom. The tonka bean does heavy lifting here, connecting the sweet gourmand axis to the powdery axis, keeping everything cohesive across the wear.
The evolution
The bergamot and neroli arrive first, bright, clear, a little bitter. Almost medicinal in the best way. The almond underneath softens the citrus without diluting it. Within thirty minutes, the orange blossom and marshmallow take over. The sweetness here is restrained, marshmallow that smells like the idea of marshmallow, not the sugar rush. The tolu balsam introduces a warm, resinous undertone that prevents the heart from floating away. By hour two, the drydown announces itself: heliotrope's powdery softness, tonka bean's coumarin warmth, white musk that sits directly on the skin. Vanilla lingers in the background, never loud. This is a skin scent, intimate, close, the kind of fragrance you catch on yourself and lean into. The heliotrope is what holds. That talc-like dryness, the memory of soap and childhood and someone clean.
Cultural impact
Excursion carves out space in the niche market for sweet-powdery oriental florals. The orange blossom and marshmallow pairing is distinctive, not a clone of mainstream white florals or a straightforward vanilla. It occupies territory similar to Pera Mera, though with its own powdery character. The performance is intimate by design, a slow burn rather than a statement, rewarding those who wear it with something close and personal rather than loud and projecting.
