The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
OUAI was founded in 2016 by stylist Jen Atkin, known for her work with top models and editorial shoots. Her travels through the Greek islands provided the sensory inspiration for Santorini, translating whitewashed cliffs, sunlit terraces, and fragrant groves into a wearable fragrance. Rather than reaching for predictable island notes like jasmine or bergamot, Atkin built Santorini around peach, grapefruit, and berries to capture that specific Mediterranean brightness. The floral heart uses honeysuckle and rose with berries for a garden-like quality that feels natural rather than constructed. The base leans on amber, musk, and vanilla for warmth and longevity, creating a scent that captures golden hour glow without tropical sweetness, just warm islands and sunlit terraces rendered in accessible form.
Santorini translates a specific Mediterranean feeling into wearable form. Peach and grapefruit provide that island brightness without venturing into tropical territory. Berries and honeysuckle offer a floral garden quality that feels natural, not manufactured. Amber and vanilla deliver warmth that extends wear time without creating a heavy effect. The philosophy centers on capturing sunlit afternoon warmth in a form that works across skin types and occasions, letting the brightness and warmth coexist without competing. For OUAI this represents accessible luxury, taking that Aegean aesthetic and making it available through a thoughtfully composed fragrance that prioritizes wearability over complexity.
The evolution
Santorini opens bright and effervescent. Grapefruit and orange create that immediate citrus burst while peach softens the edges with gentle ripeness. Within 15 minutes the heart arrives, unveiling berries and honeysuckle intertwined with rose petals, a natural transition that avoids anything jarring. By the second hour the drydown begins its slow reveal. Amber brings honeyed warmth while musk adds a clean skin quality that keeps the scent grounded. Vanilla appears in the final stage, leaving a creamy softness that persists. Throughout the evolution the fragrance maintains that light Mediterranean feel, never tipping into heaviness or sweetness, keeping the island breeze character intact through all three stages.
Cultural impact
The scent quickly found a home in casual summer wardrobes, becoming a go‑to for beach‑days and brunches. Wearers note its effortless vibe aligns with OUAI’s inclusive, salon‑inspired philosophy, offering a fragrance that feels polished without demanding a special occasion. Compared with OUAI’s more marine‑focused St. Barts, Santorini leans into fruit‑floral warmth, carving a niche as the brand’s breezy, everyday sunshine mist.
