Why it exists.
The beginning
Explosea arrived in 2023 from Once, a house built on the idea that fragrance should capture a single moment rather than announce itself. Perfumer Angéline Leporini built this one around a tension: the sharp clarity of marine notes against something warmer underneath. The name itself, Explosea, suggests the sea breaking open, and the composition follows that logic. Salt and saffron hit first, then the heart opens to reveal rose and licorice, with cypriol adding an earthy counterpoint to the brightness above.
The marine note here isn't synthetic aquatic. Once sourced sustainably harvested marine ingredients, and the result reads more mineral than soapy, salt drying on warm stone. The saffron adds a metallic edge that keeps the opening from feeling linear. What's unusual is how the rose and licorice arrive as a warmth building from below, as if the sea is hiding something softer. Cypriol, also known as nagarmotha, brings an earthy, almost smoky quality that grounds the composition.
The evolution
The opening hits with force, salt and saffron collide, the marine note sharp and almost bracing. Within minutes, the citrus surfaces and softens the edge slightly, but the real shift happens around the 20-minute mark when rose and licorice begin to rise from beneath. The sea note doesn't disappear, it deepens, settling into the composition like a current running underneath. By the second hour, the heart is fully in control: warm amber, soft cashmere wood, and that earthy cypriol that keeps everything grounded. The drydown is where it reveals its real character. Sandalwood and cashmere musk take over, the marine note fading to a memory of salt on skin. On most skin types, this lasts 8-10 hours, with the soft drydown holding close into the evening. The sillage is strong in the first hour, one or two sprays can fill a room.

Explosea arrived during a peak moment for marine fragrances in 2023, when consumers increasingly sought clean, aquatic scents that felt modern rather than dated. Unlike the synthetic aquatics of the early 2000s that dominated through overexposure, this release came at a time when subtlety and natural marine materials had become the standard. The fragrance captures how contemporary perfumery has learned to balance freshness with complexity, avoiding the clinical sterility that plagued earlier oceanic attempts.
