The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says it: mate. Not matcha, mate. The drink shared from a single gourd across circles of friends in Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay. The ritual is democratic by design, one straw, passed around, no hierarchy. 'Frente al mate somos todos iguales.' We are all equal before mate. Aichi Liu built Mate-O around that philosophy. Not a fragrance for hierarchies. For the ones who understand that sharing is the point.
What makes Mate-O unusual is the use of mate absolute, a material that carries a green, slightly bitter quality distinguishing it from typical tea fragrance. The addition of mitti attar, an Indian earthy accord traditionally tied to monsoonal soil and the memory of rain on warm earth, gives the heart a grounding that most white floral compositions lack. Oakmoss and jasmine absolute pull against the green notes, creating tension rather than harmony, and that's where the interest lives.
The evolution
The opening act announces itself with sharp clarity. Lime and matcha cut through the mate, creating a top section that feels almost medicinal, clean, green, slightly bitter. Then the hand-off arrives quietly: jasmine and ylang-ylang soften what came before, while the mitti attar introduces a dusty, earthy quality that shifts the fragrance's register entirely. Gradually, oakmoss takes control, turning the composition mossy and intimate. The base holds longest: oud, castoreum, tobacco. On fabric, the oud and vanilla linger into the next day, a faint warmth where the skin was. Above-average longevity means you'll find traces of it well into the following hours.
Cultural impact
Part of OM Parfum's Berlin Map Series, Mate-O sits at the intersection of ritual and concept. The mate absolute draws attention before the oakmoss and oud reveal depth. For those drawn to concept-driven niche work, this is the kind of release that earns a second look. It presents itself as a fragrance with something to say, one that rewards attention to how its notes interact and evolve. The unusual mate note functions as a starting point for conversation, leading wearers into a composition that unfolds with unexpected complexity. Collectors drawn to work with conceptual depth will find this fits their criteria.
