Why it exists.
The beginning
Mare comes from Olfactive Traveller as one half of La Bellezza, a pair of scents that turn toward the coast. Where Solare leans into the bright sparkle of champagne, Mare heads downward, toward the pull of waves meeting shore. Luca Maffei, the perfumer behind Mare, composes with a careful ear for the way real coastal air actually smells. Not the cartoon ocean of blue-bottle marketing, but the layered reality. Salt and citrus. Warm wood from drift and dock. The green bite of leaves still clinging to branches in the breeze off the water. The opening throws petitgrain against Sicilian orange, and the whole thing tilts herbal before it tilts sweet. There is a confidence in how the wood notes are handled, a sense of someone who knows what seaside light does to a surface by late afternoon.
The composition opens with petitgrain and Sicilian orange rather than a synthetic calone splash, which gives the opening a bitter, leafy edge instead of a melon-candy sweetness. Black pepper sits in the middle like a hinge, snapping the bright citrus into the warmer wood base. Patchouli here reads clean and dry, the kind you'd find in a classic fougère, not the dense earth of a 1970s chypre. The cedarwood and amberwood finish is what carries the longevity. Calabrian bergamot adds that specific Italian sparkle, brighter and more peppery than its Ivory Coast cousins.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to the citrus. Petitgrain and Sicilian orange arrive together with that green, almost herbal sharpness, while Calabrian bergamot adds a clean sparkle on top. Lemon leaf lifts the whole thing into something that smells less like fruit and more like walking past a grove after rain. Around the 15-minute mark, black pepper arrives quietly. It doesn't announce itself. It just adds a low static beneath the citrus, a suggestion of warmth that wasn't there before. By 30 minutes the cedarwood starts to take over, and the citrus begins to soften at the edges rather than disappear. The patchouli comes up around the hour mark, reading dry and almost smoky, like sun-warmed wood rather than damp earth. By three hours, the amberwood has settled in fully, and the scent sits close to the skin with a woody warmth that still carries a ghost of that opening sparkle.
