The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nuages entered the fragrance landscape in 2025 with six debut compositions. The name means clouds in French, an aesthetic rooted in lightness and atmospheric quality. Ciel Tonka is the house's exploration of warmth against that airy backdrop. Perfumer François Robert paired tonka bean's signature sweetness with mandarin's citrus brightness, creating an unexpected dialogue between weightlessness and depth.
The note structure itself tells a story of contrasts. Mandarin and coconut form an unusual opening, citrus brightness lifted by tropical cream. The combination is unexpectedly modern, neither the sharp citrus of a cologne nor the heavy sweetness of a dessert fragrance. Cinnamon, honey, and jasmine build a warm, floral heart that deepens as it settles. Then the base of tonka bean, benzoin, amber, and vanilla arrives, soft resins that linger without overwhelming. It's warmth you can sink into.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart. Mandarin arrives first with a citrus punch that softens as coconut settles in, a soft, tropical warmth that keeps the top from being too sharp. Around 30 minutes, the heart begins to emerge. Cinnamon weaves through honey and jasmine, creating warmth that feels almost edible. The coconut doesn't disappear, it deepens, blending with the spice to create something comforting rather than sweet. By the second hour, the drydown takes over. Tonka bean, benzoin, amber, and vanilla blend into a soft, enveloping warmth that stays close to the skin for hours. On fabric, it lingers overnight.
Cultural impact
Ciel Tonka arrives at a moment when niche perfumery is actively reshaping oriental aesthetics. The 2025 composition from Nuages rejects the dense, heavy oriental conventions in favor of something more translucent, pairing coconut's tropical lift with the warm depth of tonka and benzoin. This approach reflects a broader cultural shift toward fragrances that feel indulgent without being oppressive, and toward compositions that challenge gender-coded scent expectations. The emphasis on mandarin opening and honey warmth positions Ciel Tonka within a contemporary movement of airy orientals that feel equally at home on diverse skin chemistries.
