The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nejma 4 is part of the house's core collection of seven fragrances, each interpreting the narrative of the heroine Nejma and Vezir in a different register. Perfumer Jean Niel structured this particular composition around yellow florals, geranium, ylang-ylang, narcissus, as the primary statement, with Turkish Rose and Egyptian Jasmine woven into the heart. The choice to anchor yellow florals against an oud and oakmoss base reflects the house's wider interest in contrast: brightness held accountable by depth. Nejma 4 asks what happens when the sun sets on a floral composition, not darkness as absence, but darkness as arrival.
What makes Nejma 4 stand apart is the sustained tension between its upper register and base. Geranium and ylang-ylang don't simply announce the opening and disappear; Narcissus carries the middle with a hypnotic, slightly green sweetness that demands attention. Egyptian Jasmine and Turkish Rose then deepen the floral heart before oakmoss introduces an earthy, mossy quality that grounds the composition and prevents it from becoming purely sweet. The oud appears as a slow reveal rather than a statement, resinous, warm, working beneath the florals rather than overwhelming them.
The evolution
Geranium arrives first, crisp, green-edged, almost astringent in its brightness. Ylang-ylang softens it within seconds, adding that tropical creaminess that keeps the opening from feeling sharp. Bergamot whispers at the edges, lending citrus clarity without taking over. This first thirty minutes belongs to the yellow florals, and they occupy the space deliberately. By the second hour, Narcissus takes the lead. There's a hypnotic quality here, sweet, slightly indolic, something that pulls rather than announces. Egyptian Jasmine joins, and together they create a white floral warmth that deepens the composition. The Turkish Rose arrives quietly, adding spice without sweetness, a dry botanical counterpoint to the richness building beneath it. The base is where Nejma 4 earns its reputation. Oakmoss emerges gradually, bringing an earthy, mossy quality that grounds everything that came before. Agarwood, real oud, resinous and warm, settles into the composition like a hand on a shoulder. The transition isn't dramatic; it's patient.
Cultural impact
Nejma 4 occupies a particular space in the niche fragrance world: appreciated by those who seek depth without novelty for its own sake. The yellow floral orientation, geranium, ylang-ylang, narcissus, sets it apart from more conventional white or pink floral orientals. Wearers describe it as a fragrance that reveals itself gradually, rewarding attention rather than announcing itself. The oud and oakmoss base attracts those familiar with oriental materials who want something that earns its complexity over hours rather than making its case in the first spray.
