The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Montana launched the Mood trilogy in 2006, each fragrance exploring a different register of the house's character. Mood Soft, Mood Sensual, Mood Sexy. Three angles on one sensibility. This one, Sexy, was positioned as the boldest of the three, a direct name, a direct intent. The house built its reputation on power and presence, but Sexy walks that back slightly. It's presence without volume. The tease before the promise.
Reseda, also called mignonette, is an unusual heart note. It sits quietly between the peony and the woody base, adding a green-floral facet that most people can't name but everyone remembers. Combined with the peony, it creates that distinctive powdery impression in the opening. The real work happens in the base: patchouli and vetiver provide structure, sandalwood adds warmth. It's a classic chypre architecture dressed in something softer.
The evolution
The peony-reseda opening reads immediately powdery and soft, delicate florals with a slightly green undercurrent. Within the first hour, the oriental warmth starts to emerge. The heart shifts from powdery-floral to something richer, warmer, as the composition deepens. By hour two, patchouli and sandalwood take over. The drydown is woody-mossy, with vetiver providing a dry, slightly smoky finish that lingers close to the skin. On fabric, expect the full 6-8 hours. On skin, it stays intimate, moderate sillage, not a room-filler. The powdery warmth remains the thread throughout.
Cultural impact
Montana Mood Sexy exists in a particular moment in the mid-2000s when niche and designer houses were experimenting with direct naming conventions. The name drew attention, but the scent itself is quieter than its label suggests, a choice that divides opinion. Some find the subtlety refreshing; others expected more intensity from a house built on power. The powdery-oriental character places it in conversation with Lolita Lempicka and Narciso Rodriguez For Her, though its moderate sillage makes it a quieter presence in that company.
