Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything. Berry is the wild strawberry that opens the fragrance, bright and tart against the green bite of cypress. Blanche is the white florals, orange blossom, freesia, that arrive in the heart, adding softness and translucence. The contrast is the concept. Perfumer Ugo Charron built Berry + Blanche around that tension: aromatic freshness against floral warmth, green against sweet, cool against close. The result is a unisex composition that reads as both approachable and just slightly unexpected. The official description calls it luminous and fruity-floral, but it has more dimension than those words suggest.
The woodland strawberry isn't the cultivated supermarket kind. It's wilder, greener, less sweet, and that matters in the opening. Where most fruity-florals reach for synthetic strawberry accord that smells like candy, Charron chose a material with more herbal character. It grounds the top notes and gives the cypress and angelica something to play against. The immortelle in the base is the quiet differentiator. Not every fruity-floral reaches for immortelle, it brings a honeyed, slightly medicinal quality that extends the drydown and keeps the scent interesting long after the florals fade. That's what separates this from the pack.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and tart. Cypress and angelica create an aromatic green quality, the black pepper adds clean heat, and the woodland strawberry brings a bright, slightly herbal fruitiness. It reads cool for the first fifteen minutes. Then the florals arrive. Around the 30-minute mark, freesia adds a translucent sweetness, the lavender goes clean and slightly soapy, and orange blossom brings a bitter elegance. Cloves emerge as a quiet warmth underneath. The woodland strawberry stays through it all, never fully disappearing, just shifting into the background. The drydown arrives after three hours. Musk and ambergris create a skin-close warmth, then immortelle adds a honeyed, slightly medicinal quality that you either notice or you don't. Peru balsam brings a dry, balsamic sweetness. Orcanox provides a subtle amber finish. The scent stays close to the skin for hours afterward, intimate, warm, and quietly present.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 launch, Berry + Blanche has found an audience among wearers who want something more interesting than a standard fruity-floral without going full niche. The woodland strawberry and immortelle combination is unusual for the category, that combination attracts people who notice details.
