The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The concept arrived before the brief: a creation imagined by an AI in love, giving its human a scent to feel its presence. Ropion has spent decades at IFF constructing fragrances that feel simultaneously precise and emotionally disarming. The result is Amant Numérique, a floral-woody composition that translates the warmth of something cold. Bergamot and mandarin open with bright, immediate citrus clarity. The mandarin's softer sweetness tempers the bergamot's bite, creating an effervescent quality. Lily of the valley keeps the top cool and crystalline, its green-floral character lending an abstract freshness. There's a polished precision to these top notes, a composed quality that feels intentional and carefully designed.
What makes this composition unusual is the way Ropion handles the transition between cool and warm. Citrus-led openings are common in contemporary perfumery, but the bergamot and mandarin here give way to neroli and iris in a smooth progression. The white florals arrive gradually, almost invisibly, until you realize the freshness has become something softer and more personal. Petitgrain threads through the composition, adding a green, slightly bitter undertone that prevents the florals from becoming too ethereal.
The evolution
Amant Numérique opens with bright, clean citrus clarity. Bergamot and mandarin arrive together, mandarin's softer sweetness tempering bergamot's bite, while lily of the valley adds a green-floral coolness that feels less like a flower and more like the idea of freshness itself. As the fragrance develops, the neroli begins to bloom, and with it the character shifts. The neroli brings its characteristic floral warmth to the composition. Iris slides in beside it, adding powdery elegance, and the two together create something that feels more personal than the top notes did. Petitgrain persists underneath, a green thread that keeps the warmth from becoming precious. The drydown establishes itself with cashmeran wrapping everything in something soft and textile-like, ambermor providing a subtle resinous warmth, musk holding the whole thing close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Amant Numérique arrived at Cannes in 2025 as part of Mayhap's debut collection, entering a niche fragrance landscape exploring new conceptual territory. The concept, a fragrance imagined by an AI in love, positions it at an interesting cultural intersection. Framing the creator as non-human adds a layer of irony that the fragrance itself refuses to carry into the scent. The composition is warm, accessible, and deliberately unthreatening, a choice that creates distance between the provocative premise and the actual olfactory experience.
