The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
BCBG Max Azria's debut fragrance arrived in August 2011, developed by Givaudan perfumer Stephen Nilsen. Chief creative officer Lubov Azria called it their first true perfume for the label, and you can hear the excitement in that. The bottle itself speaks the brand language: butterflies from the logo transformed into romantic pink petals blossoming across the stopper. Nilsen built the composition around wild strawberry and black cherry, softened by a cream powdery veil of jasmine, lily of the valley, rose, and violet. Musk, orris root, and sandalwood anchor it all.
The Kir Royal note is the quiet distinction here, a French cocktail of black currant liqueur and white wine, adding a sophisticated twist to the fruity opening. It's not just strawberry and cherry; it's strawberry and cherry at a cocktail hour. The orris root in the base brings a powdery iris quality that elevates the florals, while sandalwood adds creaminess without heaviness. What makes this composition work is that it knows what it wants to be: accessible, wearable, and just a little bit elevated.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and juicy, sugared strawberry and black cherry with the Kir Royal adding a sophisticated cocktail note. Within minutes, the florals begin their slow arrival: jasmine first, then lily of the valley, rose, and violet layering in. The fruit doesn't disappear; it softens, becoming a warm undertone beneath the blooming florals. By the heart, the composition has shifted to something powdery and soft, the orris root doing its work. The drydown is where musk and sandalwood take over, creating a warm, close scent that stays intimate and close to the skin. On most skin types, it lasts 3-4 hours before fading to a quiet whisper.
Cultural impact
This fragrance fits the brand's philosophy of confident, modern femininity, fruity-floral, warm, and approachable. The 2011 launch represented the fashion house's entry into fragrance, translating their aesthetic of European polish and American ease into a wearable fruity-floral composition.
