The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maïssa Parfums, founded in 2018 in France, built its identity around the meeting point of North-African market aromas and Parisian restraint. The house founder sought to craft scents that honor heritage without becoming stuck in tradition. Désir Extrême entered the Édition Blanche line in 2020 as a statement piece, positioned as part of an ongoing dialogue between Eastern opulence and Western restraint. The perfumer behind this composition drew from the brand's cross-cultural foundation, selecting materials that carry both European elegance and North-African immediacy.
The note selection reflects the brand's philosophy of pairing contrasting materials to create tension and depth. Violet represents the soft, romantic dimension that the Maïssa Parfums house approaches with sophistication. The woody notes in the opening connect to both Western perfume tradition and the actual woods found in North-African souks. In the heart, raspberry and metallic notes may seem incongruent on paper but together they reproduce the sensory shock of encountering an unexpected encounter.
The evolution
Désir Extrême opens with violet asserting itself as the commanding presence, its powdery floral character softened by woody notes to prevent any harshness. Within the opening minutes, additional floral notes lend a layered, sophisticated quality that establishes immediate appeal. The heart phase introduces raspberry with tart clarity, simultaneously a bright sweetness countered by metallic notes that inject cool unexpected tension into the composition. This contrast defines the fragrance's middle act and distinguishes it from more conventional fruity-floral builds. The drydown unfolds progressively across hours, with leather arriving first to provide dark, tactile weight, then musk settling close to the skin for intimacy, sandalwood adding creamy warmth, amberwood contributing woody amber character, and frankincense weaving through as the resinous final note that ties the entire development together.
Cultural impact
Since its 2020 debut, Désir Extrême has sparked conversation among niche collectors for its bold caramel‑leather duality. Wearers often cite its ability to turn a simple outing into a statement, while others note the polarising sweet opening. Its leather‑gourmand profile places it alongside cult favourites like Tom Ford Ombre Leather, cementing its role as a modern, unisex classic that bridges gourmand warmth with refined animalic depth.
