The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maison Alhambra launched around 2020 as the Western-facing arm of UAE-based Lattafa Perfumes, which has operated in the Gulf region since 1980. The house specializes in inspired interpretations of established luxury fragrances, making them accessible to a broader audience without the luxury markup. Berlinetta takes its name from the Italian word for a sleek, high-performance two-door coupe, the kind of car built for the pure pleasure of driving, not status. The name promises something fast, elegant, and a little bit dangerous. Maison Alhambra's brief was to capture that energy in a bottle. The perfumer has crafted a fragrance that mirrors the experience of a manual transmission on a winding coastal road: immediate thrill at takeoff, graceful maneuverability through the middle, and a satisfying purr at the end of the journey.
The note selection in Berlinetta reflects a deliberate philosophy: start with irresistible sweetness, add floral grace, then anchor everything in warmth and leather. Plum and peach were chosen for their immediate emotional impact, creating an opening that captures attention in the way a sports car captures it at a traffic light. Peony and violet provide the romantic counterpoint, ensuring the fragrance doesn't read as aggressive or one-dimensional. The drydown notes of leather, musk, patchouli, and vanilla were selected to create a lasting impression that rewards patience.
The evolution
The opening of Berlinetta is its most overt statement, a rush of plum and peach that announces arrival without apology. Plum brings its deep, almost wine-like quality, dark and slightly tart, while peach softens the impact with its sun-kissed sweetness. This combination creates an opening that is immediately identifiable and memorable. As the fragrance evolves, the peach fades first, leaving plum to transition into the heart where peony takes command. Peony is a generous flower, offering lush petals and a sweet-floral character that bridges the gap between the playful top and the more serious base. Violet enters quietly, its powdery nuance adding dimension and a hint of retro glamour. The final chapter belongs to leather, musk, patchouli, and vanilla. Leather asserts itself as the adult in the room, providing structure and a suggestion of horsepower. Musk and vanilla create warmth and intimacy, while patchouli grounds the entire composition with its earthy, natural presence.
Cultural impact
Berlinetta occupies an interesting position in the affordable fragrance space: it's widely recognized as an inspired interpretation of Byredo's Bibliothèque, but many wearers prefer it to the original. The community consensus is that Berlinetta delivers comparable character, the same leather-vanilla-floral structure, at a fraction of the price. That value proposition has made it a favorite among fragrance enthusiasts who appreciate the composition without wanting to pay boutique prices.
