The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Poivre 23 is part of Le Labo's City Exclusive collection, fragrances made for specific cities, not the world. The name breaks down simply: Poivre is pepper, 23 is the number of ingredients in the formula. Nathalie Lorson built this around a single conviction: pepper isn't a supporting player. It's the point. Bourbon pepper anchors the composition from opening through drydown, supported by frankincense and styrax that give the spice somewhere architectural to live.
The structure is unusual, pepper appears in both the top and heart notes, which means it never fully leaves. What changes is context. In the opening, bourbon pepper is sharp and immediate. In the heart, black pepper finds company in labdanum and incense, which give it weight and atmosphere. The vanilla absolute bridges everything, keeping the resinous notes from becoming too heavy. By the time the drydown arrives, guaiac wood, Australian sandalwood, Indonesian patchouli, the pepper has become part of the landscape rather than the announcement. It's still there. It just doesn't need to shout anymore.
The evolution
The opening is a statement. Bourbon pepper hits immediately, clean and almost medicinal in its precision. The frankincense adds a sacred, aromatic quality, this is not a gentle start. Within minutes, the black pepper deepens, finding harmony with labdanum and incense that feels less like a fragrance and more like an atmosphere. The vanilla emerges gradually, sweetening the spice just enough to make the transition feel natural. By the drydown, the composition has shifted entirely. Smoke and resin dominate, patchouli, sandalwood, guaiac, with the vanilla still present but quieter, a thread running through the whole thing. On skin, expect a full workday. On fabric, expect two days of quiet presence.
Cultural impact
Part of Le Labo's City Exclusive collection, Poivre 23 is only available in London. The City Exclusives have developed a cult following, fragrances that require intention to acquire. Within that lineup, Poivre 23 stands out as one of the most pepper-forward, yet it retains the refinement that defines the house. It's the kind of scent people plan trips around.
