The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Noir Gabardine emerged in 2011 from Laurent Mazzone's interest in capturing something unnamed, the feeling behind the color black, the emotion that fashion and style carry when they stop trying and start simply being. The name itself is a statement: gabardine, the tightly woven fabric of trench coats and tailoring, associated with rain and elegance and the kind of confidence that doesn't need to prove itself. The fragrance opens with the green, almost herbal cut of galbanum, its sharpness cutting through before the composition shifts. Beneath that initial intensity, warmth begins to gather. Bergamot and mandarin add brightness, but they're not the point, they're the breath before the sentence finishes.
The structure unfolds by starting sharp and almost austere before gradually introducing warmth through the ginger-spiced heart. This sets up an inversion of what some might expect from oriental compositions. Vanilla and tonka bean arrive in the base, settling slowly into the composition rather than announcing themselves immediately. Galbanum serves as a defining element of the fragrance's character, signaling a particular restraint that keeps the scent from projecting aggressively.
The evolution
The opening is dominated by galbanum, green and herbal and unapologetically sharp, cutting through before the composition settles. Citrus arrives to soften it: bergamot and mandarin working together to brighten the edges without erasing them. As the fragrance develops, the green notes begin to recede and the heart takes over. Ginger brings warmth here, but it's warm without aggression, spice that heats without burning. Rosewood and sandalwood fill the middle register, creating a creamy woody texture that pulls the composition away from sharpness and toward something softer. In the later stages, vanilla and tonka bean emerge slowly, blending with amber's resinous depth and musk's closeness. The base notes linger on skin and fabric long after the ginger and galbanum have settled, the vanilla and tonka providing a warm, intimate drydown that wraps the wearer in subtle sweetness.
Cultural impact
Noir Gabardine stands apart from both mainstream luxury and established niche offerings. Laurent Mazzone's approach positions the house as an alternative to conventional fragrance-making, prioritizing personal narrative over market positioning. The fragrance appeals to those seeking something outside mainstream options, offering a distinctive character that rewards attention. Its loyal following among collectors reflects its unique positioning rather than broad commercial appeal.
