The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Highland Heather arrived in 2023 as part of Jo Malone's limited-edition Highlands collection, a line inspired by the untamed beauty of the Scottish landscape. Perfumer Marie Salamagne set out to bottle the feeling of a morning haze that rolls across the hills, then fades to reveal a wilderness blanketed in blooming heather. Rather than reaching for typical floral or citrus accords, she built the composition around the herbs and greens that thrive in that rugged environment.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of capturing authenticity over convention. Heather represents the landscape itself, while cypress and vetiver evoke the soil and ever greens that frame it. Lavender bridges the floral and herbal worlds. Amber provides just enough warmth to suggest late afternoon sun breaking through clouds. The result is a fragrance that feels place-specific rather than generic, a wearable portrait of the Scottish Highlands in late summer.
The evolution
The journey begins immediately in the heart notes, as heather's honeyed sweetness emerges alongside lavender's fresh herbal character. Cypress provides a dry, greenwood presence that grounds the opening, preventing it from drifting too delicate. As the fragrance develops, vetiver's earthy root quality comes forward, adding texture and depth. The drydown settles into a quiet warmth where amber lingers alongside heather's fading sweetness, leaving a soft, grounded impression rather than a dramatic fade.
Cultural impact
Part of Jo Malone’s limited‑edition Highlands line, Highland Heather quickly became a favorite among fans who appreciate scent‑driven storytelling. Its crisp green opening and heather heart have been noted in forums as a modern take on classic British countryside aromas, cementing its place as a seasonal staple for those chasing a touch of the outdoors.
