The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Classique X arrived in January 2010 as a flanker to the iconic Classique, inspired directly by Jean Paul Gaultier's autumn/winter 2009/10 fashion collection. The 'X' isn't arbitrary, it mirrors the collection's aesthetic, reinforced by the pendant adorning the bottle's neck. Jacques Cavallier Belletrud crafted this EDT to translate the runway's glittering, sexy, sophisticated spirit into scent form. Where the original Classique leaned oriental and voluptuous, Classique X takes a lighter path, still unmistakably Gaultier, but one built for different moments. The 50 and 100ml flacons arrive in matt glass with a transparent X stretching across the torso, packaged in black with beige details. It's the same shape, reframed.
The real tension here lives between the bright citrus opening and the warm powdery close. Bergamot and mandarin orange arrive like a flash, immediate, sparkling, attention-grabbing. But the heart is where Classique X earns its complexity. African orange flower brings that heady, almost hypnotic quality white florals can achieve, while iris adds a powdery sophistication that elevates rather than softens. Peony bridges both worlds, fresh and delicate. The base of cedarwood and vanilla then settles everything into warmth that stays close to the skin, intimate rather than announced. It's this arc, from bright spark to soft warmth, that makes the fragrance feel complete rather than simply pleasant.
The evolution
The first hour belongs to citrus. Bergamot and mandarin orange burst onto skin with real energy, a sparkling opening that announces presence without demanding attention. The handoff to florals happens around the one-hour mark, gradual, not abrupt. African orange flower takes the lead, its sweet-honeyed floralcy filling the space the citrus begins to vacate. Peony and iris add texture underneath, the iris lending that powdery signature that keeps the heart from reading as merely cloying sweetness. By hour two, the composition has settled into something softer. The cedarwood emerges first, a woody warmth that grounds the florals, then the vanilla arrives, quiet at first, growing into a creamy, skin-warm presence that lingers. The drydown reads as powdery warmth, intimate and close. Moderate sillage means it stays within arm's reach rather than filling the room. On most skin types, expect 4-6 hours of wear, with the base notes holding longest.
Cultural impact
Classique X occupies a particular space in the Gaultier lineup, less statement than the original Classique, more nuance than a simple flanker should have. The moderate sillage and daytime longevity make it a daily-wear option rather than an occasion scent, and that's exactly how many wearers approach it. The X-shaped bottle design remains one of the more distinctive flacons in its price range, drawing compliments even from people who know nothing about fragrance. It's the kind of scent that earns its place in a rotation through consistency rather than drama.
