The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iris Gris arrived in 1946 and became the Jacques Fath house's defining iris statement. When Marie Salamagne approached the 2009 fragrance, she faced a choice: reissue something beloved but potentially shelf-dormant, or create a contemporary feminine interpretation that honored the source material without becoming a replica. She chose the latter. Irissima was born as a tribute, not a copy, translating the spirit of Iris Gris into a composition that speaks to modern noses while respecting what came before.
The wisteria in the opening carries that same cool, cascading quality as the original's violet-like softness. Pink pepper adds a sharpness that keeps it from feeling dated. The iris heart, iris, jasmine, rose, is deliberate rather than nostalgic: it pulls from a classic structure but builds something distinctly its own. Cedar and musk arrive quietly in the base, holding the powder in place without overwhelming it. The whole composition settles close to the skin and stays there.
The evolution
The opening is wisteria and bergamot, cool florals that read almost dewy, with a violet-like softness that catches you off guard. Pink pepper arrives within minutes, not to spice but to lift: a textural shift that keeps the cool florals from sitting still. The heart takes its time. Iris asserts itself alongside jasmine and rose, the three florals layered deep enough to feel rich without tipping into heaviness. This is where the powder lives, not as a note but as a quality, woven through the iris and carried by the rose. The drydown is cedar and musk, quiet and warm, holding the powder close to the skin. It lasts a full workday on most. The iris lingers longest, that cool, powdery quality that started it all, still present when everything else has settled into skin warmth.
Cultural impact
For those who know vintage iris compositions, Hermès Hiris, Prada Infusion d'Iris, Irissima reads as a contemporary cousin. It carries that same powdery iris elegance but without the formality. The sillage stays intimate, present but never announcing itself. That restraint is the point. It wears best in cooler seasons and during the day, where its quiet confidence makes sense.
