The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Idyllwild is named for a small mountain town in California with the prettiest of names. Ineke Rühland visited and something clicked, the forested slopes, the crisp air, the smell of pine warming in sunlight. She didn't want to recreate it exactly. She wanted to translate it into something you could carry. The composition begins with a field trip through conifer forests, distillations of Douglas fir and Ponderosa pine capturing that aromatic freshness. A road trip further afield brought more elements: wildcrafted sagebrush from Big Sur and Monterey cypress oil, the aromas that waft through open windows as you drive along the coast. Rhubarb tea adds an unexpectedly tart brightness, a counterpoint to the smoke waiting in the base. Cypriol and oud together create a campfire note, not literal but present: the memory of warmth, of wood catching light. Musk and the conifer base settle into the skin for a drydown that needs to be experienced.
What makes Idyllwild unusual is the rhubarb-tea opening in an aromatic-fougère context. Most fougères open with lavender or coumarin; this one leads with tart, herbal brightness that catches you off guard. The conifer heart, Douglas fir, Ponderosa pine, cypress, is where the California inspiration lives most honestly. And the base with oud and cypriol is where Ineke earns the name: a smoky campfire that arrives late and lingers close. The combination of fresh conifer oils and animalic smoke is uncommon. It reads as forest, then fire, two moments in the same day, brought together in a bottle.
The evolution
The opening arrives tart and bright, rhubarb tea and grapefruit cutting through the morning air. The herbal quality is present but not sharp; it sits close, almost medicinal in its clarity. Within minutes, the herbal notes settle as artemisia and lavender arrive, building the aromatic fougère character. The conifer oils assert themselves as the heart develops, cypress and Douglas fir taking over while the citrus fades, leaving a forest-like presence that feels like moving deeper into the trees. By the heart's midpoint, the conifer oils begin to recede and the real depth emerges. Cardamom introduces a quiet spice. Oud and cypriol produce a campfire smoke quality, not literal smoke, but the memory of it, warm and resinous. Musk and the conifer base settle into the skin, creating a woody-smoky signature that persists.
Cultural impact
Among aromatic-fougère fragrances, Idyllwild occupies its own space. The combination of California conifers and smoky oud-cypriol base is uncommon, not quite a standard fougère, not quite a woodsmoke fragrance. The blend represents a distinctive approach to the genre, one that draws from forest landscapes and introduces darker, more complex elements beneath the traditional aromatic structure. The rhubarb-tea opening stands out as the fragrance's most memorable feature, an unexpected combination that catches attention and sets a tone quite different from conventional fougère openings.
