The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In Astra launched Wega in 2024 as a deliberate counterpoint to their earlier release Mismar, which inhabited darker, more austere territory. Perfumer Sofia Bardelli set out to demonstrate range, building a fragrance that could capture floral elegance without retreating into heaviness. The brief centered on rose as a structural element, supported by fresh fruit notes that could lift the composition into brightness. Wega represents the brand's first explicit engagement with gourmand territory, signaling a willingness to embrace sweetness as a valid aesthetic choice rather than a compromise.
Bardelli's note philosophy centers on contrast as a generative principle. Rose alone can read as either medicinal or romantic, depending on context. By surrounding it with marshmallow, she domesticates the flower's more challenging qualities while preventing the gourmand element from collapsing into pure sugar. The vetiver in the base serves a similar function: it reminds the wearer that sweetness has structure, that Wega is a composed fragrance rather than an accident of chemistry. Pairing considerations should acknowledge this balance. Wega works alongside light, clean fabrics and simple jewelry; it competes poorly with heavy textures or overly complex compositions.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with the immediate impact of raspberry, its tartness cutting through the top notes like a flash of light. Cherry blossom follows, softening the fruit's edges with its delicate floral character. Within minutes, the heart begins to assert itself: rose petals unfurl at the center of the composition while marshmallow rises to meet them, creating a sweet-floral tension that defines Wega's middle stage. The drydown represents the most complex phase, as vetiver's earthy smokiness gradually emerges, grounding what might otherwise become excessively sweet. Bourbon vanilla and tonka bean complete the journey, their warm, ambery quality providing a finish that lingers pleasantly without overwhelming. The progression from bright tartness through floral sweetness to warm, woody depth gives Wega a narrative arc that rewards patience.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Wega has sparked conversation among niche enthusiasts for its unapologetically sweet heart and its polished, star‑inspired identity. Reviewers often compare its rose‑marshmallow duo to Delina (2017), noting a similar gourmand twist but appreciating Wega’s cleaner, more fruit‑forward opening. Its strong sillage and moderate longevity have made it a favorite for evening outings, while the vetiver base earns nods for adding a grounding earthiness that sets it apart from purely sugary compositions.
