The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maamoul Mon Amour is part of IDEO Parfumeurs' Delicacies Collection, a line devoted to translating heritage sweets into wearable compositions. The collection had already explored baklava and other Lebanese sweets, each piece finding its own path between memory and invention. With Maamoul Mon Amour, the challenge was different: how does one capture the essence of a date-filled shortbread pastry without simply replicating its appearance or taste? Dates carry a particular weight, a honeyed darkness that sets them apart from lighter sweet notes, and that depth demanded a counterbalance rather than further embellishment.
What makes this composition distinctive is the placement of black sesame. Moving into the heart alongside nutmeg and red chili, the sesame shifts the date-pistachio opening into something more savory than expected. The caramel in the base threads through the wood and vetiver rather than sitting on top, keeping it integrated and dry rather than syrupy. White musk keeps the drydown close to skin, a deliberate choice that prioritizes intimacy over projection. This isn't a fragrance that announces itself across a room.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and nutty, pistachio leading, dates following half a step behind. There's a sweetness here but it's not loud. Within ten minutes the black sesame arrives and shifts the register, moving from pastry toward something earthier, almost mineral. The red chili stays quiet at first, then asserts itself as a clean heat that peaks around the thirty-minute mark before settling into the composition. By hour two, the dates have softened and the caramel-guaiac wood drydown takes over, warm, slightly smoky, with vetiver adding a green counterpoint that keeps it from going too sweet. The fragrance holds close to the skin throughout its wear, evolving gradually rather than announcing itself. On fabric, the base notes linger longest, with the woody-caramel warmth remaining perceptible several hours after application.
Cultural impact
Maamoul Mon Amour translates the beloved Lebanese maamoul pastry into wearable form, preserving a heritage treat that holds deep roots in Levantine culture. The traditional date-filled cookie appears across festive occasions and family gatherings, where the molds are pressed by hand and the scent of baking fills the air. IDEO Parfumers' Delicacies Collection honors this tradition by capturing the edible memory in a composition. The release speaks to a broader interest within niche perfumery in drawing from culinary heritage, where fragrance becomes a vehicle for cultural recollection and sensory nostalgia.
