The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The 2013 Eau de Iceberg Oud is the house's most unexpected turn. Iceberg built its fragrance identity on freshness, crisp openings, clean finishes, the energy of sport. But with perfumers Aliénor Massenet and Pierre Wargnye behind this composition, the brand reached for something different. An oud. Not as a trend chase, but as a genuine departure from the aquatic and citrus signatures that had defined their earlier work. The 74 collection marked Iceberg's push into richer territory while staying true to that underlying sporty DNA. This is oud built for someone who didn't come in expecting oud.
What makes the structure work is how the pyramid moves from Iceberg's natural habitat to somewhere deeper. The top, ginger, cardamom, elemi, keeps that characteristic brightness, that athletic jolt. But cistus creticus absolute shifts the trajectory. Less common than standard labdanum, it carries a dry, slightly leathery resinousness that gives the heart real texture. The saffron absolute reinforces the warmth without tipping into sweetness. Egyptian geranium adds a green-rosy counterpoint that prevents the whole middle from becoming too heavy.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and bright. Ginger and cardamom arrive together, creating a sensation closer to citrus than spice, clean heat, like the first breath of cold air. The elemi adds a faint citrus-resinous lift that keeps the top from feeling heavy. It stays sharp for maybe thirty minutes before the warmth underneath begins to emerge. The heart unfolds gradually. Saffron introduces itself as a metallic sweetness, almost medicinal at first, before geranium's green-rosy quality softens it. Cistus adds body without weight. By hour two, the composition has shifted entirely. The oud builds slowly, not announcing itself but growing, layer by layer, as the spice notes begin to fade. By hour three or four, it's the dominant voice. Cypriol and patchouli support it, adding an earthy, slightly smoky depth that feels less like incense and more like warm wood. The drydown lasts. The projection moderates after the first hour, becoming intimate and close. It's a skin scent by design, present for those near, invisible to those farther away.
Cultural impact
Part of Iceberg's strategic expansion beyond their fresh, sporty signature. The 74 collection, launched in 2013 alongside Sensual Musk and Sandalwood, represented the house's move into warmer, more complex compositions. Targeted at the Middle Eastern market where oud carries cultural weight, it offered Iceberg's athletic refinement translated into something richer. The collection found its audience among those seeking an entry point into oriental fragrances without abandoning the clean, sporty sensibility they'd come to associate with the brand.
