The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
House of Artem, established in 2023, has built its identity on narrative-driven niche perfumes that translate cultural moments into olfactory experiences. Bryan Elliott, the house's perfumer, took inspiration from Black American heritage to craft Flos Novis as an allegory for fresh starts and cultural rebirth. The Latin name translates to new blossom, and Elliott chose Narcissus as his heroic ingredient not merely for its beauty but for what it represents: the ability to bloom precisely because conditions seem inhospitable. The fragrance arrived in 2024 as a statement piece for a young American house staking its claim in the niche fragrance landscape.
Narcissus functions as both literal ingredient and philosophical anchor in Flos Novis. Rather than treating it as an accessory note, Bryan Elliott built the entire fragrance architecture around its presence across all three phases. This approach required careful calibration to prevent the Narcissus from overwhelming the composition in its opening and base phases, which is where the supporting materials reveal their purpose. Mandarin Orange and Bergamot were selected to brighten the opening without competing, while Sandalwood and Vanilla were chosen to create warmth that complements rather than masks.
The evolution
Flos Novis begins with a striking freshness that announces the arrival of spring. Narcissus, Mandarin Orange, and Bergamot create an opening that feels both green and citrus-bright, like stepping into a sunlit garden after rain. The fragrance then transitions into its heart, where Narcissus remains and is joined by a lush medley of White Flowers. Green Tea introduces a clean, slightly bitter quality that keeps the floral heart from becoming overly sweet. As the fragrance moves toward its drydown, the warmth builds gradually. Sandalwood provides a creamy, wooded foundation while Vanilla adds softness, and Narcissus persists throughout, connecting each phase of the fragrance to its original source. The result is a progression from crisp freshness to rich florals to comforting warmth, a complete journey that mirrors the narrative of rebirth it was designed to tell.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Flos Novis has been noted for its cultural resonance, referencing Black American heritage and the idea of rebirth. The fragrance landed a spread in British Vogue’s April issue, positioning it as a scent of modern optimism. Wearers describe it as the olfactory equivalent of a sunrise over a historic neighborhood, a subtle nod to stories of perseverance. Its narrative‑driven approach has sparked conversation among niche‑perfume circles about how scent can echo social narratives, cementing House of Artem’s reputation as a house that blends artistry with cultural dialogue.
