The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
This is Not Melatonin 01 arrived in 2022 as part of Hormone Paris's catalogue of scent-as-function, a line that names fragrances after neurochemicals. Melatonin was a natural extension of that concept: the molecule that tells the body it's safe to power down. The composition works through powdery florals, built around rose, ylang-ylang, and jasmine as the primary carriers. Tonka sweetness wraps the floral core, and a soft musk sits close to the skin, reading more like warmth than perfume. It's a composition meant for the hours when the day winds down, a fragrance that prioritizes closeness over projection. The rose carries most of the structure, moving from a brighter, dewy opening into something rounder and more cushioned as the hours pass.
What's interesting here is the restraint. The ylang-ylang and jasmine in the opening provide brightness without sparkle, a particular kind of perfumery sleight of hand where the florals lift the composition without turning it bright or sharp. Tonka bean in the heart adds warmth without weight, and the sugar-musk-heliotrope base gives the characteristic almond-heliotrope sweetness that powder fragrances are known for. Rose appears throughout the pyramid in multiple structural positions, carrying from the opening through the heart and into the base.
The evolution
The opening is immediate but gentle. Powdery notes land first, almost before you've registered the spray, followed by ylang-ylang and a dewy rose that sits somewhere between fresh-cut stems and something older, like rosewater left open on a counter overnight. There's no citrus snap, no green bite. Just softness, arriving. The first stretch belongs to that rose-jasmine pairing. The jasmine stays wrapped in the powder rather than pushing through it, which keeps the whole thing muted. As the heart develops, tonka bean slides in underneath, adding a faint warmth that reads more like skin temperature than baking spice. The floral notes don't really change. They just get quieter as the base starts to build. The musk gradually takes over the architecture of the composition, settling into a deeper register.
Cultural impact
This is Not Melatonin 01 sits within a brand that treats fragrance as a neurochemical tool, and its powdery, low-stimulation profile appeals to wearers who want something comforting and close rather than expressive and projecting. Within the Melatonin sub-collection, this first release introduced the template: soft florals and musk, built for the hours when the day is done. The fragrance reads as a signal rather than a statement, something worn for self rather than for the room. Its composition leans into the quieter side of perfumery, using rose and heliotrope to create a sense of softness that feels more like a mood than a scent.
