The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Twilly d'Hermès Eau Poivrée arrived in 2019 as the first flanker to the original Twilly, launched two years prior. Christine Nagel, Hermès's in-house perfumer, described it as a tribute to the 'Hermès girls', women who swim against the tide, set their own tempo, invent their own rhythm. The fragrance itself is anything but subtle. Nagel imagined a new facet for the Twilly woman, one that carries more spice, more daring than its predecessor. The composition is built around a vibrant pink peppercorn, followed by rose and patchouli that arrive tender, elegant, complete. This is not a scent that asks to be understood. It simply is.
The pyramid is almost startling in its simplicity: three notes. Pink pepper, rose, patchouli. No fanfare, no filler. The pink peppercorn brings its own spice, bright, almost fizzy, a kind of cheeky confidence. The rose doesn't compete with it; it arrives when the moment is right, softening the edges into something tender. The patchouli anchors everything, keeping it close to the skin, intimate rather than announced. It's a lesson in restraint as luxury: three materials, no apologies, no padding.
The evolution
The opening hits fast, pink pepper that reads almost fizzy, definitely attention-getting. Some say pencil shavings. Others say a party that just walked in. Either way, the first minutes are unmistakable. After the initial burst settles, the rose arrives. Not aggressive. Not sweet. Just present, the tender part of the composition that makes the pepper feel less like a dare and more like a conversation. The patchouli doesn't announce itself. It settles in quietly, deepening the base into something earthy and warm that lasts through the drydown. By the final hours, the rose and pepper have faded to a memory, but the patchouli lingers, close to the skin, intimate, the kind of presence that someone standing next to you will notice before you do.
Cultural impact
The Twilly line speaks to a different Hermès woman than some of the house's other fragrances. Younger in spirit, not necessarily in age. She sets her own tempo. The 2019 release brought a spicy, modern edge to the collection, one that added a new dimension to the Hermès fragrance wardrobe. It's a reminder that the house can explore playfulness while maintaining its composure.
