The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nonconforming arrived as part of Fyrinnae's catalog of compositional surprises, a house where the fragrance matters more than the presentation. The name does some work before you ever smell it, telegraphing a refusal to settle into easy categories. Rather than treating its listed accords (citrus, amber, woody) as a formula to fulfill, the composition asks those categories to collide with each other. Lychee brings a bright, almost candied fruit note into a space dominated by resinous styrax. Camphor adds a cool, lifted presence against tonka's warmer, nutty softness. The tension between these ingredients is visible in the pyramid on paper, and it plays out even more clearly in actual wear.
What makes Nonconforming structurally unusual is how its citrus elements stack and repeat. Lemon zest and lemon peel both appear alongside a camphor presence, keeping the citrus character visible longer than many similar compositions manage. Litsea cubeba does similar work across the structure, acting as both a brightener and a quieter floral thread throughout the wear. The result is a scent that never fully commits to being a citrus cologne or a woody amber; it moves between both identities, and that oscillation is central to the experience.
The evolution
The opening belongs entirely to citrus. Litsea cubeba and lemon peel arrive with the speed of cracking open a fresh one, sharp and almost electric against skin. Camphor sits underneath, cool in a way that creates a clean, medicinal lift without tipping into anything too sharp or aggressive. As the wear progresses, the lychee shows up and the sharpness folds inward. The scent becomes softer, warmer, less confrontational. Violet and tonka bean join quietly; you don't notice them arriving so much as realizing the citrus has stopped being the whole story. Once the base takes over, the composition shifts into its warmer register. Styrax brings a vanilla-adjacent warmth with a resinous undertone that darkens the composition without weighing it down. Ho wood provides a creamy, almost lactonic softness that blurs into the tonka.
Cultural impact
Nonconforming sits within a corner of the indie fragrance world that treats unusual combinations as the point rather than the exception. The composition pairs a bright citrus-litsea cubeba opening with a denser base of styrax and ho wood, creating a fruit-amber hybrid that reads as neither mainstream fresh nor heavy oriental. Among independent perfumers, lychee as a structural ingredient (not just a sweetener placed at the top) has become something of a quiet trend, and Nonconforming leans into that approach rather than away from it.
