The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Chocolatine landed in 2022, and the name does exactly what it says on the tin. It's a flake-laminated rectangle stuffed with dark or semi-sweet chocolate, the kind of thing you grab with coffee and eat before it cools. Fyrinnae built the scent around that single, specific object: not chocolate in the abstract, not pastry as a concept, but the exact moment a chocolatine comes out of the oven and the chocolate is still soft. The four-note list is bare and unapologetic: dark chocolate, chocolate, croissant, puff pastry. No vanilla, no caramel, no sugar notes. The brand's own description flags the result as not a very sweet fragrance, and the composition backs that up. The cocoa reads dark and slightly bitter, the way good dark chocolate does when you bite past the sweetness into the roast.
What's interesting is the restraint. The note list is four items: dark chocolate, chocolate, croissant, puff pastry. No vanilla, no caramel, no sugar rush. That absence is where Chocolatine earns its character. The dark chocolate and the second chocolate note stack to give the composition a double layer of cocoa, one slightly more bitter and the other a touch rounder, like the difference between a baking bar and a bar meant for eating. The croissant note adds a yeasted, slightly fermented warmth, the kind of smell that comes from dough that has had time to proof.
The evolution
On skin, the opening is chocolate at full volume, rich and slightly bitter, with the croissant note sitting underneath like the smell of the kitchen itself. It reads warm, almost edible. Over the first stretch of wear, the chocolate pulls back, and the pastry starts to take up more space in the composition. What comes forward is a dry, buttery, almost-bready character, the kind of warmth that lingers after the oven has been turned off. The cocoa hangs on as a faint dusting, never fully disappearing but no longer commanding the center. As the hours pass, the fragrance moves into mostly pastry and skin, with a ghost of dark chocolate still detectable if you press your nose to the spot where it was applied. The whole arc is a slow handoff from cocoa to crust, from molten center to the dry, flaked edge of cooled pastry.
Cultural impact
The 2022 release reads as a small, specific object rendered in scent form. It's built around two chocolate notes and two pastry notes, and the whole composition leans on cocoa's darker, more bitter qualities rather than the sweet frosting side of the gourmand category. That gives it a tone that feels less like a dessert confection and more like a description of an actual object: the laminated dough, the dark filling, the warmth of something just out of the oven. It fits the pattern of fragrances that take a single food or drink and refuse to gild it, and the four-note structure keeps the focus tight.
