The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Released in 2023, Beneath The Forest from Fyrinnae has a very specific setting: beneath the canopy, where sunlight thins out and the real work of decomposition happens. Not a walk through the woods. A descent into the layer where mushrooms fruit and roots tangle in the dark. The official copy makes the intent explicit: it's about what grows where light won't reach. The brand's transparent about the construction too, noting that no actual mushroom material or decay note went into the formula, which makes the accuracy of the illusion even more interesting. The fragrance reads as an editorial choice from the first spray, committing fully to a single environment without hedging toward the greener, more familiar forest-floor shorthand.
What's unusual here is the absence of the obvious. There's no pine needle, no oakmoss, no fern. The composition builds its effect from mulch and mushroom aromatics, skipping the green surface layer entirely and going straight to the dark, tangled zone where organic matter breaks down. The result is something that reads less like a walk in the woods and more like kneeling in the dirt after rain, close enough to watch a cluster of fungi push through decaying wood.
The evolution
The opening minutes are the boldest statement. Mulch and cold, damp soil hit immediately, almost aggressive in their earthiness. There's a mineral coolness that reads more stone cellar than forest path, and it doesn't apologize for itself. The raw fungal edge arrives quickly, the kind of sharp, slightly animalic note you get walking past a fallen log after rain, and it sits at the front of the composition for a while before anything else gets a turn to speak. Around the 30-minute mark, the mushroom character settles into something more rounded. Not the cooked-umami kind, more the raw fungal note you get from a damp cluster pushing through bark. Roots and evergreen emerge quietly underneath, giving the composition just enough structure to keep it from reading as a single flat note.
Cultural impact
Beneath The Forest by Fyrinnae sits comfortably in the corner of indie perfumery that values strangeness and specificity over mass appeal. The scent draws from a tradition of atmospheric, soil-rooted compositions that has grown quietly within the indie fragrance community over the past several years, a tradition that prizes accurate place-rendering over the more decorative, abstract approach common in mainstream perfumery.
