Why it exists.
The beginning
No 3 arrived in 2012 as the third chapter in Eutopie's numbered series, following No 1 and No 2. The French house had been working through Carros, just outside Grasse. Sonia Constant, who developed this formula for Eutopie, brings a precise and grounded hand to the composition, balancing dense resinous materials with enough air around them to keep the fragrance wearable rather than overbearing. The brief was unspoken but legible: another entry in a sequence that builds on what came before, refining the house's approach to oud-centered compositions without repeating the exact formula of its predecessors.
What Constant built inside No 3 is a densely layered oriental-woody architecture where oud doesn't float above the composition. It sits inside a resinous scaffolding of frankincense, amber, and balsam tree, pinned down by patchouli and sandalwood. The saffron and cumin do something quietly unusual here. They sharpen the smoke rather than sweetening it, lending the opening a dry, almost medicinal edge that slowly gives way as the resins warm and settle. The smoke reads more like smoldering incense resin than something sugared or syrupy.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes belong to saffron, frankincense, and the bright sting of cumin and juniper. It reads almost medicinal at the edges, like opening a cabinet of dried spices in a room that hasn't been aired in a week. Then the oud arrives. Not as a separate event but as an infiltration. The smoke thickens, the resins warm, and by the second hour the composition has settled into its true posture: a heavy, resinous oriental that carries the weight of aged wood and cooling incense smoke. Patchouli and sandalwood carry the middle stretch, grounding the brighter top notes with something earthier and more sustained. The drydown is where No 3 earns its reputation. At hour six the top notes are long gone, but the amber, oud, and balsamic resins are still negotiating with skin, settling into a warm haze of wood and faint sweetness.
Cultural impact
No 3 sits comfortably alongside other contemporary oud-centered fragrances, but wears its oud differently. The composition emphasizes the incense and resin facets of oud rather than treating it as a sweet or syrupy base note. There's a restraint here, a willingness to let smoke and wood carry the composition without amplifying them into something louder than they need to be. Wearers who gravitate toward atmospheric oud rather than high-impact oud tend to find what they're looking for in this kind of structure.
